From Brazil with love

This story begins in Brazil, where my grandmother was born Her mother was a Brazilian black woman, descendant of slaves. Her father was a rich immigrant from Portugal. She was an illegitimate child and as her mum died giving birth to her she had to stay with her father. One of her older half sister lived in Portugal, and because her father didn’t want to take care of her, he sent her away on a long boat trip to Portugal. She was around 8 years old and she was alone on a boat, with only giant doll to keep her company She used to dress her up, and pretend she was alive. When she arrived in Portugal she discovered that she wouldn’t be living like a rich kid anymore her sister was a teacher in a really tiny and poor village. So she used her doll clothes and gave them away to children in the village. That is is where my grandmother grew up, raised by her sister. She studied and ended up very smart.

My grandfather grew up in a poor family of hairdressers near Porto, and when he was around 20 years old he went to war. Where He fought against the portuguese colonies, he was part of the army and did the angolans har. That’s how he met my grandmother he was away from his country and my grandmother used to write him letters, they didn’t really know each other, but that’s how they fell in love. When he went home after losing the war, my grandmother was waiting for him. They started a life together and had my mum and my two uncles. A few years later they got a divorce however that’s another story to tell.
