Let theatre talk to you

La Joven Compañía is a group of young, dynamic actors working to appeal to a young audience. They usually transform classic plays from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet to Federico Garcia Lorca's La casa de Bernarda Alba. These plays are adapted by the actors themselves in a very detailed-oriented process to make a new one which talks explicitely and sincerely about nowadays problems; mainly young people's problems, like bullying, education, or even TV shows. They are set in Madrid, and though they may be twelve or so in each play, the whole company includes more than 30 actors, all of them are finishing or have recently finished their degrees. Those actors are chosen for their energy, their dynamism, and their capacity to reach teenagers through their acting. They recently closed their most recent show: a remake of Romeo and Juliet called "Hey Boy Hey Girl", which they have been playing for two years from their own place in Madrid, the Conde Duque theatre, to the Atrium Auditorium at Viladecans, near Barcelona. This play sets Shakespeare's most tragic story on a reality show, transforming the characters into young contestants divided into two confronted houses and filmed on their daily life. "Hey Boy Hey Girls" has had a massive success with young audiences; the house was full of cheering and standing ovations, especially on the matinées when the theatre opened its doors exclusively to high schools. "The impact the audience has on us as actors is huge when we are in front of these teens. What we do speaks to them, they answer to every single move and sentence, and we receive their energy on stage", said Sara Sierra, who played Juliet's modern version July. The cast does a debate time after each show, in which they answer questions, get comments and recommendations, and connect with their audience in a closer, more familiar way. While having closed Hey Boy Hey Girl last Saturday, the company is coming back in January with a new season focusing on school bullying under the slogan #stopbullying.
