Spøkland

Spøkland was a land separate from the human world, parallel to it, where resided all of the creatures human feared and only monsters could cross from one world to another. The fear that humans felt was transformed by the Spøkland Ministry of Energy and Development, and creatures lived off of it.

But today, was not a normal day in Spøkland. All of its inhabitants were busy running around anxiously in anticipation. It was the day the new Ruler would be crowned and they had the power to choose between two main contestants: One of them was Nefertari, a mummy who had been involved in all sort of political scandals. However, her experience could not be denied, she had worked in many different positions in the political sphere, and she had been competent in every single job; the other candidate was Pumpking. He was what some creatures called “despicable”, he was against any creature that was different from him and he seemed to believe that his wealth made him unstoppable. He had no political experience, yet some of the creatures seemed to support his ideas. Before he had entered as a candidate, he was the chief of his own company “Pumpkings” which was very well known in the land, specialising in the sale of fear inducing items in the human world. His slogan was catchy and his supporters seemed to like it: “Make Spøkland terrific again”.

Many wanted Nefertari to win, Spøkland was meant to be a gloomy and spooky place to humans, but not a place where any of the creatures felt threatened. They all seemed to live in harmony until Pumpking had started to point out their differences, and the decrease of fear that humans felt towards them, which weakened all the monsters. He seemed to believe that the zombies and pumpkin creatures were superior to everyone. He had lead a strong campaign full of hate and he seemed to despise the vampires and ghosts the most, he claimed the vampires only tried to kill every creature they came across and that they had become too popular with humans in novels such as “twilight” and weren’t scary enough anymore.

He had claimed that ghosts could not be trusted, and that they seemed to appear inside of creature’s homes without being invited; He also pointed out that some of them like Casper, were even becoming friends with the humans. He wanted to ban them out of Spøkland for being “disturbing” to other creatures.

He had even attacked witches and had said many things about them which had been considered distasteful and upsetting statements for many.

Despite his ridiculous speech, Pumpking was widely appreciated among zombies and pumpkins, zombies liked feeling empowered and having their work as scary creatures recognised, and pumpkins enjoyed knowing that their wealth, which mostly came from halloween sales, would be protected with him in power, therefore they didn’t care about other creatures’ suffering as long as they benefitted from Pumpking’s policies.

Fear pushed all creatures to vote, they could not allow to be governed by a creature that not only accepted, but also encouraged degrading and even attacking others. Many felt unsafe in the only place that had accepted them as they were. And everything indicated that Nefertari would win, in spite of the fact that the Zombie population had multiplied in the past. Creatures still had hope.

But hope was not enough. Pumpking was victorious. The creatures cried as they realized that Spøkland would truly become a terrifying place.
